About Us

The Republic Residents’ Association (RRA) represents the community interests of residents at 25 Broadway Ave., 70 Roehampton Ave. and works in partnership with North Toronto Collegiate Institute (NTCI), residents of buildings adjacent to NTCI and other neighbourhood high-rises. We are a group of volunteers who came together as an association in 2010, and incorporated in 2017, to address the many concerns of residents who are living through the massive current and proposed densification of the Yonge–Eglinton neighbourhood.

Most of us live in high-rises in this community and have benefited from new developments in the area. We are not anti-development but rather encourage developers to work with us to build truly liveable communities. We have worked with city planners, city councillors and developers to represent the interests of our community and to ensure that we have a voice during the development process. We support developments that provide much needed housing for individuals and groups, services and shopping, businesses and recreational spaces and that take into account the shortage of local public schools.

Recent

Accomplishments

  • Successfully participated in a mediation process with the City and the developer for 40-44 Broadway Avenue that resulted in a reduction of tower height and density, a new green space for the neighbourhood and a church building better situated to the streetscape.

  • Initiated a structured way to manage construction in our neighbourhood by working with the City to establish a framework for discussing, monitoring and ameliorating the effects of development in our community.

  • Established ongoing consultation and participation in local development applications from initial proposals, to involvement at OMB and LPAT, to construction management. We have been involved in the following developments:

    • 40-44 Broadway

    • 55-65 Broadway
    • 91,99 Broadway
    • 75 Broadway
    • 100,110,120 Broadway
    • 117,127 Broadway
    • 39,89-101 Roehampton
    • 77,141,170 Roehampton
    • 55 Erskine
    • 2323 Yonge St.
    • Canada Square

  • Advocated for and obtained a crosswalk on Broadway Ave. to help students and residents cross safely on a busy street.

  • Advocated for and obtained one-way designations for Broadway and Roehampton for the duration of construction; this designation is temporary.

  • Organized multiple general RRA town hall meetings featuring local political representatives, city staff, police and guest speakers; organized all-candidates meetings for both the municipal and provincial elections.

  • Actively participated in the Midtown in Focus process with City Planners and Councillors; informed and mobilized the community; successfully advocated City Council to pass   Midtown in Focus unanimously.

  • Initiated improvements on the NTCI playing field and the walkway between our buildings; investigated and collaborated on the maintenance of public artwork in our joint walkway.

  • Lobbied for and acquired traffic lights at Yonge and Roehampton.

  • Worked with the City to widen the sidewalk and improve terrain on the south end of the NTCI playing field.
